Summer forays into gardens nearby

Summer, at last, and a chance to get out and about to visit other gardens in the area.  I was curious to visit a garden called Backhouse at Rossie Estate, by Collessie which can be reached from Tayport on the A92 and then the A91, heading towards Auchermuchty.  There is a helpful banner at the end of the road and then it’s a short drive, beside wildflower filled verges, to the garden itself.  The estate is home to the National Collection of Backhouse Heritage Daffodils and the gardens have been 10 years in the restoration.  In brief, the walled garden is a delight, the heritage centre fascinating and the coffee and scones first rate!  I also took a wander through the nearby woods.  Andrew and Caroline whose home Rossie Estate is, are keen to be as organic and sustainable as they can.  I will definitely be back to share this gem with friends and family and I’ll particularly look forward to a visit in the spring to see the daffodils.

While in the area I decided to visit Monimail Tower which is an excellent project relying on volunteers to cultivate sustainably within a large walled garden.  The emphasis is on low-impact, organic gardening and they are part of the permaculture association.  There was no one about on the day I visited so I wandered around admiring the wonderful fruit and veg that was growing there.  The tower, which is situated just outside the garden, is open to the public and records the history of the area and, if you don’t suffer from vertigo, there are also lovely views of the surrounding countryside from the top.

Two excellent gardening endeavours to complement our own wonderful community garden in Tayport.
