Above the recording from expert talks on the topic of how climate change is affecting the plants we grow for food which took place on the 22nd of February, and were organised by Tayport Climate Action Group. Session was chaired by Jan Davidson and we heard from the two speakers:
- Kate Treharne who is the Community Gardens and Allotments Officer for Dundee City Council, a Green Party candidate for the May Council elections and activist with Extinction Rebellion
- Kevin Frediani, the Curator of the Botanic Gardens and Head of Grounds at the University of Dundee, and 5-string banjo player.
Both are experts in plants and local (and international) ecology and are totally committed to tackling climate change.
They explored with us how climate change is affecting the food we grow and what actions we can take in mitigation. Kate focused on food growing and how important it is that people realise how little of our food is actually grown here. So we are not talking about climate change affecting agriculture in the UK but on a global front and how ‘multiple global breadbaskets are failing as we speak’. Kevin will introduce us to ‘urban, peri urban and rural landscapes’ whose ecosystems are being undermined through climate change and current unsustainable land use.
In the face of these issues, we must become much more self- and inter-reliant to promote food security. In this discussion, we explore how we can act together in Tayport to start addressing this ‘wicked problem’.
