After the resounding success of our first online gardening workshop on seed sowing last week, we continued today with another one presented by another local veg growing guru, Bob Bilson (@bilsonrobert1 on Twitter). You can watch it on YouTube directly here.
Bob gave us a virtual tour of Strathkinness Community Growing spaces, and followed up with a brief chat on sowing and planting times he’s been using for best success with his fruit and veg. He shared a lot of other fantastic gardening tips in the Q&A that followed, including his secret ‘non-stink’ recipe for comfrey tea to feed your phosphorus-hungry crops.
We hope to have Bob back for another session, but in the meantime our next week workshop will be delivered by Peter Christopher, Community Gardener at PLANT’s Tayport Community Garden. Join us online Tuesday, 21 April at 1pm. Bookings as usual through Eventbrite available here .
Resources:
- Bob’s sowing and planting times for Strathkinness – PDF (should work well for places around North East Fife)
- RHS advice on crop rotation
- Comfrey tea – Concentrated Comfrey Liquid Feed reicipe on Allotment Gardener website seems to be similar to the one provided by Bob in his presentation.
- Vertical veg blog – all you need to know about container growing in small spaces (UK based). Includes advice on refreshing your old potting mix.
This workshop series is an informal collaboration between a number of local community food growers in response to increased demand for growing advice under covid-15 lockdown, including Edible Campus (Transition University St Andrews), Strathkinness Community Garden, Ninewells Community Garden, PLANT’s Tayport Community Garden. We would welcome any other contributors, please get in touch with Kaska on blog@tayportgarden.org.
