Last year I moved out of a house with a garden in Tayport and into a flat in Dundee. Over the winter I didn’t miss the outdoor space too much, but as the days got longer I began to get itchy, green fingers. I filled my flat with pot plants but this isn’t the same as having a vege patch. So a few weekends back on Sunday I headed down to the Tayport community garden. It was great to catch up with friends, Lewis and Ian were there working hard as always and the garden was looking ready to go for the new season. Jenny and Peter have plans for maximising the space and I am excited to see how this year will develop.

I was really amazed to see that, despite this being the hungry gap, one of the beds in the poly tunnel was ready for harvesting. Someone had cleverly planted a bed of Oriental winter salad leaves at the end of October. These were so delicious we ate some straight off the plant with our lunch. Peter and Kaska shared some recipe suggestions and I went away (having help dig and plant up the onion beds) with a bag of mizuna, tatsoi and other flat leaf greens. Back home I set about making a stir fry and added some foraged wild garlic. The next day I made stuffed mushrooms with salad.

So inspired by this in my flat I decided to germinate a few seeds which I’d extracted from some heritage tomatoes earlier in the year. I started them off on some damp paper and then transplanted these into some recycled growing pots. They’ve come up already and I think I’ll need to find some greenhouse space to put these in, possibly at the PLANT Community Garden. And the best thing is I’m back in the gardening groove!
